I don't know if it's true but I do know I share KSL's concerns. Getting what you wish for is dangerous because once it's gone what do you have? I'm trying to enjoy the moment (first novel coming out soon), soak it all up, not get too stressed over the second one - and that is excellent advice, Agent Sydney - write it sans paranoia, write it with enjoyment and if it tanks, well, at least the journey was fun.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-632086038992984402.post-74446078764444399102010-01-08T19:52:40.067+11:002010-01-08T19:52:40.067+11:00As the person asking this question, sincere thanks...As the person asking this question, sincere thanks for such a thoughtful, practical answer. My non-fiction book (biggish advance) hasn't yet earned out, but the novel (more realistic but still decent advance) did within its first six months- so you've given me hope. I also really appreciate the facts about actual figures, about contractual limits on new projects (hadn't thought of that- must go check my contract), the reminder about being a business (so true) and this: "But only take as much responsibility as is yours. It's your agent's job to make sure you're with a publisher who can reasonably sell that many copies." Miss Snark is dead. Long live Miss Snark!

Thank you also for the encourgaement. I think the title you've given this post says it all- I *am* proud of what I've achieved, but also terrified that now I'm finally getting to do what I've always wanted to that with one bad book or bad agent or bad move it could all disappear. The perils of getting what you wish for! ;)

All the best- this is a wonderful blog and I intend to haunt it from now on!KSLnoreply@blogger.com
